DEALING WITH TEMPER TANTRUMS
Young children are easily frustrated when they can’t complete a task or can’t have what they want, and they make sure their irritation is known. This can be especially difficult to deal with when you are running late for work, preparing dinner, trying to get to bed, or out in public. Here are a few things to remember about temper tantrums:
- This is Normal: Temper tantrums are typical for young children
- This won’t last forever: As your child learns new words and other ways to express his frustrtion, he should be throwing fewer and fewer temper tantrums.
- Young children need time: Make sure there is plenty of time for morning and evening routines so your child will have time to do it for themselves and you won’t feel rushed, and give them plenty of warning when you plan on changing activities.
Keep your cool. it’s easy to get frustrated yourself when it feels like everyone in the grocery store is staring at you and your screaming child, but you can’t expect your child to learn how to control her feelings if you cannot control yours. it will be over much sooner if you stay calm.
